DCS Maintenance

There are two good practices maintaining DCS.

  1. Cleanup after patching / updating and
  2. periodically reclaiming space used up by logs, screenshots, track files and similar.

Below you'll find items you can safely delete.

Patch Cleanup

While DCS patch and repair methods are solid they are not perfect. A few things can commonly be deleted after patching to prevent performance degradation.

  • Visual effect libraries
These will be re-created fresh on next start)
    • Located at: %UserProfile%\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\ (copy & paste this into explorer)
      1. X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\fxo
      2. X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\metashaders
      3. X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\metashaders2

Reclaiming disk space

Deletable folders (DCS Standalone Version)
  • Corrupted updates
    • X:\..PATH_TO_DCS_INSTALL_DIRECTORY..\DCS World OpenBeta\_downloads\.torrents
  • Backups from Updates
    • X:\..PATH_TO_DCS_INSTALL_DIRECTORY..\DCS World OpenBeta\_backup.000 (Also if present: …001, …002 etc.)
Deletable files (All DCS Versions)

Almost of these are inside your DCS Saved Games directory, located at: %UserProfile%\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\ (copy & paste this into explorer), with the exception of Tacview (follow the example path below to find it).

  • Old DCS Logs
    • X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Logs\dcs.log-yyyymmdd-hhmmss.zip (old compressed log files e.g. dcs.log-20190519-194824.zip)
  • Track Files
    • X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Tracks\ (multiplayer track files, capturing flights so they can be replayed)
  • DCS Screenshots
    • X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\ScreenShots\ (Screenshots taken)
  • Tacview Files
    • X:\Users\..YOUR_USER..\Documents\Tacview\ (if installed Tacview continuously creates it's session capture files here)
